What is TLS? For over 15 years, TransPerfect Legal Solutions (TLS) has been the world's leading provider of global legal support and communication services to the world's top legal professionals.
When were you founded? TransPerfect Legal Solutions was founded in 1992 as a subsidiary of our parent company, TransPerfect, Inc.
What accreditations have you acquired that speak for the quality of your services? TransPerfect Inc. is the largest company of its kind to be fully ISO 9001:2000 certified in all offices and production centers worldwide. In 2008, TransPerfect also became the first major language services provider to earn EN 15038:2006 certification, the only standard specifically created to address issues of quality within the translation industry. To date, TransPerfect Legal Solutions is the only major legal support services provider to be certified to both ISO 9001:2000 and EN 15038:2006 quality standards, and our management system has become an international standard for quality requirements in business-to-business dealings.
In order to maintain our certifications, we are audited several times a year by leading third-party organizations. Internally, all levels of management perform interim audits to regularly assess and improve our processes in order to ensure conformity to our core belief – a commitment to quality. We refine our testing, evaluation, and training processes on an ongoing basis to ensure that we are employing only the most expert in-house staff and linguists in every language and legal field.
What is your global presence? How many offices
do you have? TransPerfect Legal Solutions has 56 offices on 4 continents, including 16 worldwide production centers.

What is your process for selecting and
certifying linguists? TransPerfect Legal Solutions is dedicated to providing the highest quality translation services, which begins with the selection of our most valuable resources – our linguists. In order to ensure that the most qualified linguists are working on each and every project, we created the TransPerfect Linguist Certification (TLC) Program, which has since become the industry standard for legal linguist certification. This program is designed to serve the interests of clients with specialized needs for translation. Before a project is assigned to a particular translator, they will have qualified to work within specific legal fields by taking one or more of over 80 subject-specific tests. This helps us ensure that projects are assigned to linguists with in-depth knowledge of the each legal area.
TLS's linguists must meet or exceed the following requirements, which are verified by our Linguistic Resources Coordinator as part of the initial screening:
Candidate must be a native speaker of the target language
Candidate must provide proof of educational background and experience through either a) college degree in translation or interpretation and five years of experience, or b) college degree and seven years of professional experience in translation or interpretation
Candidate must document translation or interpretation experience in the legal industry
Candidate must provide three references, at least one of which must be from an end client
Candidate must have maintained residency (equal to or greater than three months) in their native country within the past five years
Once these prerequisites are met, each candidate is taken through a series of assessments intended to measure their degree of professionalism, comprehension of ethics, and proficiency in specific languages and legal fields. Having passed the initial screening and performance assessments, linguists are required to maintain their certification by partaking in TransPerfect Legal Solutions' educational offerings. A series of six web-based seminars are offered each year. Each certified legal linguist is required to attend at least one of these webinars.
