The Challenge

Troutman Sanders was serving as the lead counsel for a major global pharmaceutical company embroiled in an international litigation case spanning dozens of countries. This complex case involved a large volume of clinical trial documentation in over 15 different languages. While in the final stages of discovery, the case team realized that no steps had been taken to protect the confidential patient information contained within the documents, such as names and indentifying marks. The sensitive information would have to be redacted before any document production could take place. With little time to complete the project, Troutman Sanders sought a legal service provider who could perform the high-volume multilingual redactions under a tight deadline—and with a level of accuracy that would hold up in court.

The Solution

Having successfully utilized our services for court documents in the past, Troutman Sanders enlisted  TransPerfect Legal Solutions (TLS) to support their efforts on the project. Right away, TLS arranged a meeting between the client and our project management team to go over the details of the task, such as the firm's specific requirements for black box redaction and the privilege review process.

TLS then established a thorough set of review guidelines, selected a team of highly skilled linguists, and began the conversion of tens of thousands of pages of foreign language documents into PDF form for redaction. The linguists – each of whom was both a native speaker of the target language and a subject-matter expert – worked directly with the project management team to ensure that the process was handled consistently and that the files were prepared to Troutman Sanders' precise specifications. Finally, TLS was able to provide consistent interim deliveries so that the client could process the documents on a rolling basis, saving time and money.

By utilizing our vast network of multilingual resources and expert litigation specialists to streamline workflow, TLS was able to deliver the documents by the required deadline and further build on our strong partnership with the firm. The files are now awaiting a court order for full translation—also to be handled by TLS.
