Liz Elting and Phil Shawe met at New York University Stern School of Business in 1991. Having spent several years working in the translation industry, Ms. Elting felt there was a need for a service-minded enterprise that could deliver complex projects quickly and accurately. In 1992, Elting and Shawe founded TransPerfect Inc. to fill that gap. Their mission: to provide the highest quality language services to leading businesses worldwide. With no external financing, TransPerfect grew from its beginnings as a two-person company operating out of a dorm room into one of the world's most reputable language and business services organizations.
Early in the company's history, TransPerfect's founders recognized that legal professionals in particular had highly specialized language service needs. The tight regulations governing the legal industry called for an exceptional level of subject-matter expertise—well above and beyond the requirements of most fields. Accordingly, TransPerfect created a specialized legal practice group that eventually evolved into its own division, TransPerfect Legal Solutions.
Every person on the TLS staff has extensive experience in the legal field and exposure to multiple practice areas. In fact, many of our employees worked at law firms and major corporations before joining TLS. In addition, each and every legal translation project is performed by highly qualified legal linguists who have been rigorously tested and certified under the TransPerfect Linguist Certification Program—the industry benchmark for linguist certification.
